Much in the way of the landscapes it evokes, the germs of The Righteous Province sprout as a series of recorded improvisations that yet were left to ferment (and then still be cooked) before revealing to us as a vinyl under the auspices of label Transamericas.
The album drifts in the manner of a procession, mischievously swaying as if auguring a sacrifice. Hence the delight of the orchestra. Harps, horns, and congas whirl up in a vortex that blurs out boundaries. ¿How if not does a trumpet turn into an animal rumbling?
It all begins with the beat of a bass drum and a hypnotic clave pattern. One after another, the instruments unfold like creatures released from a pole totem. Each one of them pieces of a bigger warp, attestations of a cosmogonic, visionary deed.
We witness the singing voice –anointed as the cohort’s head chief– promenade through this Via Crucis, struggling not to stumble amid the crowd. It’s not only the amount of chicha: as the record goes on, it becomes clear that things are set up for transmigration.
The same merry-go-round that summons up and orchestrates the combo revolves the other way, gathering the substance of its rhythms and melodies from the underground. The result is a spirit that is as arcane as it is refreshing. Like fresh juice into old grape must.
This procedure, that on the one hand, amalgamates and, on the other, disentangles tradition, is medullar to The Righteous Province's sound and vision. It is this hyphenation, achieved through nimble sampling and mixing, what encourages us to talk about a merengue on purpose.
And so it goes, this moonstruck, madcap caravan, dragging us at the gates of a new realm, where blood flows inwards like in anemones and what appears to be a head explodes into a fruit full of spores.
